Cold doesn’t hurt — it can help
Solar panels run on light, not heat. In fact, panels are often more efficient in cold temperatures. Very hot panels lose a little efficiency, which is why a crisp, sunny winter day can produce surprisingly well.
Clouds reduce output but don’t stop it
On an overcast day, panels typically produce around 10–30% of their clear-sky output — less, but not zero. Modern panels still capture diffuse light through clouds. Over a full year, cloudy regions simply have fewer “peak sun hours,” which is already accounted for when you size a system by location (see how many panels you need).
Winter: shorter days, lower sun
The real winter effect isn’t cold or clouds — it’s fewer daylight hours and a lower sun angle. Production dips in winter and peaks in summer. That’s normal, and it’s why solar is evaluated on annual production, not any single month.
What about snow?
- Snow can temporarily cover panels and stop production until it slides or melts off.
- Panels are usually tilted and smooth, so snow often clears quickly, and reflective snow can even boost output afterward.
