Solar Financing: Cash vs Loan vs Lease vs PPA

By SunSavvy Team · Updated July 20, 2026

How you pay for solar changes your savings more than almost any other decision. There are four common options. Here’s the honest comparison.

1. Cash purchase

You pay upfront and own the system outright.

  • Best savings — no interest, and you keep every incentive you qualify for.
  • Fastest payback and the highest lifetime return.
  • Downside: a large upfront cost (often $15,000–$30,000 before incentives — see how much solar costs).

If you have the cash and will stay in the home, this almost always wins.

2. Solar loan

You borrow to buy the system and still own it.

  • You keep ownership and the incentives (including any tax credit you qualify for).
  • Little or no money down.
  • Watch the rate and “dealer fees.” A high APR or a big hidden origination fee can quietly erase much of your savings. Compare the loan’s total cost to a cash purchase.

Good when solar pays back faster than the loan costs you.

3. Lease

A company owns the panels on your roof; you pay a fixed monthly rent.

  • Little/no upfront cost, and the installer handles maintenance.
  • You do not own the system, so you don’t get the tax credit or incentives — the owner does.
  • Savings are smaller, and a lease can complicate a future home sale.

4. Power Purchase Agreement (PPA)

Like a lease, but you pay per kWh the panels produce instead of a fixed rent.

  • No upfront cost; you buy the solar power, usually below the utility rate.
  • Again, you don’t own the system or get incentives.
  • Watch the annual price escalator — some PPAs raise the rate 2–3%/yr.

Quick comparison

Own it? Get incentives? Upfront Savings
Cash Yes Yes High Highest
Loan Yes Yes Low High
Lease No No None Low
PPA No No None Low

Bottom line

If you can, buy (cash or a fair-rate loan) — ownership plus incentives is where the real money is. Leases and PPAs trade most of the savings for zero upfront cost and convenience. Run your own numbers first with the Solar Savings Calculator.
