Solar Installation Timeline: Why It Takes 2–4 Months, Not 2 Days

Short answer: Expect 2–4 months from signing to switching on. The physical install is only 1–3 days; the rest is site survey, engineering, permitting, inspection and utility interconnection — and permitting plus interconnection are where nearly all the delay happens.
Homeowners often assume solar is a weekend job. The installation is close to that. The project is not.
Here is the realistic sequence, with typical durations.
Step 1 — Site survey and design (1–2 weeks)
A technician visits to measure the roof, photograph the electrical panel, check rafter spacing and condition, and run a shade analysis. Some of this is now done by drone or satellite, but a physical inspection of the main service panel is unavoidable.
What can go wrong: an undersized or obsolete main panel. A 100 A service or a panel with no room for a backfeed breaker means a panel upgrade — often $2,000–$4,000 and its own permit. This is the most common mid-project cost surprise, and a good installer flags it at the survey rather than after you have signed.

Step 3 — Permitting (2–8 weeks, wildly variable)
The plan set goes to the local building department, sometimes the fire department, and often an HOA.
This is the least predictable stage in the whole project. Some jurisdictions have adopted automated instant permitting and turn approvals around in a day. Others take two months and issue corrections that restart the clock. Your installer cannot control this, but a good one knows the local office’s habits and will tell you honestly what to expect.
If you have an HOA, submit for architectural review in parallel, not after. Many states restrict HOAs from blocking solar outright, but they can usually impose reasonable aesthetic conditions — and taking six weeks to say so.
Step 4 — Installation (1–3 days)
The visible part. Crew arrives, mounts and flashes the racking, lays rails, sets panels, runs conduit, installs inverter and disconnects, ties into the main panel. Power is off for a few hours during the tie-in.
Complex jobs — ground mounts, trenching, main panel upgrades, batteries, tile roofs — stretch this to a week.
Step 5 — Inspection (1–3 weeks)
A municipal electrical or building inspector signs off. Failures are common and usually minor: a missing placard, wrong conduit strapping, a labelling issue. The cost of a failure is not the fix, it is the rescheduling — often another one to two weeks.
Step 6 — Utility interconnection and PTO (2–6+ weeks)
The utility reviews the inspection sign-off, swaps in a bidirectional meter if needed, and issues permission to operate. Only then may you legally switch the system on.
This stage has become the biggest bottleneck in high-penetration territories, where interconnection queues run months. Ask your installer for the current PTO turnaround in your specific utility, not a national average.

Fast projects finish in six weeks. Slow ones run six months. Anyone promising “installed next week” is describing one step of six.
How to keep it moving
- Return documents same-day. Contract, utility authorisation forms, HOA applications. Every day you hold paperwork is a day added to the end.
- Start the HOA review immediately, in parallel with permitting.
- Ask for a named project coordinator and a written milestone schedule at signing.
- Ask about the panel upgrade before signing, not after the survey. Get it in the quote as a contingency line.
- Ask what happens if PTO is delayed. Some contracts start payments at installation, not activation — meaning you pay for a system legally forbidden to run.

If a tax credit deadline, a net metering grandfathering date, or a rate change matters to you, work backwards by at least four months. Interconnection deadlines are usually keyed to the application date or the PTO date, not the contract date — confirm which, because the difference is months.
