Types of Solar Panels: Monocrystalline vs Polycrystalline vs Thin-Film

When you get a solar quote, the panel type matters for efficiency, appearance and price. There are three main kinds. Here’s what actually differs.
Monocrystalline (most common for homes)
Made from single-crystal silicon.
- Highest efficiency (typically ~19–22%), so you need fewer panels for the same output — great for limited roof space.
- Sleek all-black look many homeowners prefer.
- Slightly more expensive per panel, but usually the best choice for residential roofs today.
Polycrystalline
Made from multiple silicon fragments melted together.
- Lower efficiency (~15–17%), so you need more panels for the same output.
- Cheaper per panel, with a bluish, speckled appearance.
- Less common on new residential installs now that mono prices have fallen.
Thin-film
A different technology, deposited in thin layers.
- Lowest efficiency for the space, so it needs the most area.
- Lightweight and flexible; better suited to large commercial roofs or special applications than typical homes.
Which should you choose?

Don’t forget the inverter
