How Do Solar Panels Work? A Simple Explanation

Solar panels can seem like magic, but the idea is simple: they turn sunlight into electricity your home can use. Here’s the whole process, step by step.
Step 1: Panels turn sunlight into DC electricity
Each solar panel is made of many solar cells (usually silicon). When sunlight hits a cell, it knocks electrons loose — the photovoltaic effect — creating a flow of direct current (DC) electricity. More sunlight means more electricity.
Step 2: The inverter converts DC to AC
Your home runs on alternating current (AC), not DC. So the system’s inverter converts the panels’ DC electricity into AC your appliances can use. There are two common types:
- String inverters: one central unit for the whole array.
- Microinverters: a small inverter on each panel, which handles shade better.
Step 3: Electricity powers your home
The AC electricity flows to your electrical panel and powers whatever’s running — lights, fridge, AC, EV charger. Your home uses solar power first before pulling anything from the grid.
Step 4: Extra power goes to the grid (net metering)
When your panels make more than you’re using (common at midday), the surplus flows back to the grid and you earn a credit under net metering. At night, or when you use more than you make, you pull from the grid and spend those credits.
Step 5: Batteries (optional)
Instead of exporting surplus, you can store it in a home battery to use later — for evening use or backup during outages.
