Microinverters vs String Inverters: Which Is Better?

The inverter is the part of your solar system that converts panel DC electricity into the AC your home uses (see how solar panels work). There are two main approaches, and the right one depends mostly on your roof.
String inverters
One central inverter wired to a “string” of panels.
- Lower cost and a long track record.
- Downside — shade: panels in a string are linked, so if one panel is shaded or underperforms, it can drag down the whole string.
- Monitoring is usually at the string level, not per panel.
- Best for simple, unshaded roofs with one orientation.
Microinverters
A small inverter on each panel.
- Better with shade and complex roofs — each panel works independently, so one shaded panel doesn’t drag down the rest.
- Per-panel monitoring, so you can spot a single failing panel.
- Works well on roofs with multiple angles or partial shade.
- Downside: higher upfront cost, and more units on the roof.
Power optimizers: a middle option
Some string systems add power optimizers to each panel — a hybrid that gets much of the per-panel benefit while keeping a central inverter.
Reliability and lifespan

Which should you choose?
- Simple, sunny, single-plane roof, tight budget: a string inverter (optionally with optimizers) is cost-effective.
- Shade, dormers, or multiple roof angles: microinverters usually produce more and are easier to monitor.
