Off-Grid vs Grid-Tied Solar: Which Do You Actually Need?

Short answer: If a utility line reaches your property, grid-tied (or grid-tied with a battery) is almost always the right answer — the grid is a free, infinite, zero-maintenance battery. Going fully off-grid typically costs 2–4× as much and only makes sense when a grid connection would cost tens of thousands to run.

“Off-grid” carries an appeal that has little to do with arithmetic. The arithmetic is worth doing anyway.

The three architectures

Hybrid (grid-tied with storage). Adds a battery and a hybrid inverter that can isolate the house from the grid. Normal economics on normal days, backup power on bad ones, and on time-of-use rates the battery earns its keep daily.

Off-grid. No utility connection at all. Panels, a large battery bank, a charge controller, an off-grid inverter, and nearly always a generator for the worst weeks of winter.

Why the grid is hard to beat

Treat the grid as a battery and its specification is absurd:

  • Unlimited capacity
  • Round-trip efficiency near 100% under retail net metering
  • Zero capital cost
  • Zero maintenance
  • No degradation, ever

A real battery is finite, roughly 85–90% efficient, expensive, degrades, and needs replacing in 10–15 years. Choosing to abandon the grid means replacing a free asset with an expensive one.

What off-grid actually requires

Sizing an off-grid system is governed by the worst week of the year, not the average:

Days of autonomy. Design for three to five days without meaningful sun. For a house using 30 kWh a day, that is 90–150 kWh of storage before accounting for depth of discharge — commonly 30–60 kWh usable even in a heavily conservation-minded household.

Oversized array. You need enough panels to both run the house and recharge a depleted bank in the short, low-angle days of December. Off-grid arrays are routinely two to three times the size a grid-tied designer would specify for the same annual usage.

A generator. Nearly every off-grid installation has one, because sizing the battery and array for a two-week December overcast is far more expensive than burning some propane a few days a year.

Load discipline. Electric resistance heat, conventional water heating, and central air conditioning are brutal off-grid. Off-grid homes lean on propane or wood heat, heat pump water heaters, and efficient everything.

Real maintenance. Battery monitoring, generator servicing, charge controller settings, seasonal checks. It is a system you operate, not one you forget.

Result: two to four times the cost of a grid-tied system serving the same house, plus ongoing effort.

When off-grid is clearly right

One scenario dominates: the grid is expensive to reach.

Utilities commonly charge $15,000 to $50,000+ per mile to extend distribution lines, and the homeowner pays. If your build site is half a mile from the nearest pole, the connection alone can exceed the entire off-grid system cost — and then you still pay a monthly bill forever.

Other genuine cases:

  • Seasonal cabins with light loads
  • Islands and remote parcels with no service at all
  • Sites where permitting a new service is impractical

If none of these apply and there is a meter on your wall, off-grid is a lifestyle choice you are paying a large premium for. That is a legitimate choice — just make it with the number in front of you.

The honest middle: hybrid

Most people who say they want off-grid actually want independence during outages and not being at the mercy of the utility. A hybrid system delivers both without the penalty:

  • Runs the house through outages on an essential-loads panel
  • Stores midday solar for the expensive evening peak
  • Still exports surplus for credit
  • No generator required, no autonomy sizing, no operator burden
  • Roughly $12,000–$20,000 more than plain grid-tied, versus $40,000+ for genuine off-grid capability

Bottom line

The grid is the best battery you will ever be offered, and it is free. Leave it only when reaching it costs more than replacing it. Everyone else who wants resilience should be pricing a hybrid system, not an off-grid one.
