Solar Loan vs Cash: Which Actually Saves More?

By SunSavvy Team · Updated August 6, 2026

If you can’t (or don’t want to) pay cash for solar, a loan is the usual alternative. Both let you own the system and keep the incentives — the difference is cost. Here’s how to compare.

Cash: the most savings

Paying cash means no interest and the fastest payback. You keep every dollar of savings and the full tax credit. If you have the funds and will stay in the home, cash almost always wins on total return.

The trade-off is the large upfront outlay (often $15,000–$30,000 before incentives — see how much solar costs).

Solar loan: own it with little down

A solar loan lets you install now with little or no money down, and you still own the system and claim incentives. It works well when your solar savings outpace the loan’s cost.

The catch is the loan’s true cost:

  • Interest rate (APR): a low rate preserves most of your savings; a high rate erodes them.
  • “Dealer fees”: many solar loans bake in a hidden origination fee (sometimes 10–20%) to offer a low headline rate. That fee raises the real system price.
  • Term length: longer terms lower the payment but raise total interest.

How to compare them fairly

  1. Get the cash price and the loan’s total cost (all payments + fees) for the same system.
  2. If the loan’s total cost is close to cash, it’s a reasonable trade for keeping your savings liquid.
  3. If dealer fees and interest add a lot, negotiate — or consider a HELOC or lower-fee lender.

Watch out: some installers quote a lower cash price than the loan price for the same system, because the loan hides a dealer fee. Always ask for the cash price too.

What about leases and PPAs?

Both avoid upfront cost but you don’t own the system or get the tax credit, so savings are much smaller. Full comparison in solar financing options.

Bottom line

Cash saves the most; a fair, low-fee loan is a solid second that still beats leasing. Always compare the cash price to the loan’s all-in cost, and hunt for hidden dealer fees. Model your payback with the Solar Payback Calculator.
