How Much Do Solar Panels Save Per Month? (Real Numbers)

Short answer: Most US homes with a properly sized system save roughly $100–$180 a month on electricity. The figure is driven almost entirely by your electricity rate and how much you use — the same system saves under $60 a month in Louisiana and over $300 a month in Hawaii.
“How much will I save per month” is the question behind every solar search. The honest answer is a formula plus a wide range, so here is both.
The formula
Monthly savings ≈ (Annual production kWh × Effective rate $/kWh) ÷ 12
That is it, with two caveats: production you cannot use and cannot export at full value is worth less, and fixed charges never go away.
The typical case
A US home using 11,000 kWh a year at an effective rate of 16.5¢/kWh pays about $1,815 a year, or $151 a month.
An 8 kW system in an average-sun location produces roughly 11,300 kWh a year. Offsetting nearly all consumption leaves the fixed charge — say $14 a month — so the new bill is around $14–$30 and the saving is about $125–$140 a month.
That is the headline “typical” figure. Now the spread.
Why the range is enormous
The same 8 kW system, same panels, same installer, in three states:

Notice that Louisiana has more sun than Massachusetts and saves far less. Rate beats sunshine almost every time — which is why sunny, cheap-power states are often worse solar markets than cloudy, expensive ones. This is the core point in is solar worth it.

What eats into the number
Fixed charges. $8–$25 a month regardless of usage. See how to read your electric bill.
Export credit below retail. If your utility credits exports at wholesale rather than retail, every kWh you send back is worth a fraction of what you would have paid. In those markets, savings depend heavily on self-consumption — using power as you generate it, or storing it.
Seasonality. A system producing 1,400 kWh in June may produce 450 kWh in December. Under annual net metering, summer surplus banks against winter. Under monthly netting, it may expire — which cuts annual savings noticeably.
Time-of-use pricing. If you export at 8¢ midday and buy at 32¢ at 7pm, your effective savings per kWh generated is far below your effective rate. See time-of-use rates and solar.
Savings versus payback
A monthly saving is not the whole story — what matters is the saving against what you paid.
An 8 kW system at $3.00/W is $24,000 gross, about $16,800 after a 30% federal tax credit. At $140 a month ($1,680 a year), simple payback is 10 years. Everything after that is close to free electricity for another 15 years or more.

If you financed rather than paid cash, compare the monthly loan payment with the monthly saving. A payment of $120 against a saving of $140 is cash-flow positive from month one. Do savings grow?
Two forces pull in opposite directions:
- Panels lose about 0.5% of output a year.
- Electricity prices have risen roughly 2–3% a year over the long run.
Net, the dollar value of your generation tends to rise. A system saving $140 a month today would, at 2.5% escalation and 0.5% degradation, save roughly $195 a month in year 15. That is the compounding argument for solar — you are locking in a price for 25 years while the alternative drifts upward.

- Pull your annual kWh and effective rate from twelve months of bills.
- Subtract the fixed charges — those are not offsettable.

$100–$180 a month is the honest middle. Your number is set by your rate, your usage and your utility’s export rules — in that order. Sunshine matters less than any of them.
